Chapter 6

When I got back to the Breezy Spoon the Needlework Club had arrived after lunch and were just getting started on their projects.

“Hey, Dani,” Audrey called, “we'd like your opinion on something; most of the church members get together every year and buy a Christmas tree to display up in front of the church. Of course, there's two denominations that are opposed to Christmas trees and they cover it with a sheet during their services, so this wouldn't concern them. What concerns the others is that this year they bought the Christmas tree from Cooter and it was stolen from the state forest. The question is should we get rid of it rather than celebrate Christmas with stolen property in the church?”

East Spoon Creek City has church goers representing several different denominations, none of which have enough members to have its own church. Several decades ago the town built a church and each group gets to have services for one hour on Sundays. Who gets to hold their service at what hour is determined by alphabetical order. This has caused a bit of a problem when it comes to cleaning the church since that duty is also determined by alphabetical order. The church hasn't been cleaned in a long time since the sect that has the first hour has only two of members, both in their late eighties. Others have offered to do the cleaning, but they couldn't agree on which group should do it.

The different groups eventually make some concessions when it comes to disagreements among the sects. For example, there is a young man in East Spoon Creek City who is very talented at wood carving, and carved a really nice four foot tall copy of Michaelangelo's David which he donated to the church. This caused a controversy and as a compromise the statue is now wearing a small pair of boxer shorts. People have very strong opinions when it comes to religion around here.

“Well, since Cooter paid a fine for buying stolen goods I think it would be okay to keep the tree,” I said.

“By the way,” Jenny asked, “why does the statue of David have gray hair? Is it supposed to represent him as he grew older?”

“That's a half inch layer of dust. We'll all have gray hair before anyone can agree on who is supposed to clean the church,” Abigail sighed. “Something's going to have to be done about that.”

I went into my office and got my uniform out of the closet to change for work. Since Sid wasn't working at Al's Emporium anymore and no one was likely to hire him for a party with a killer after him, he was probably going to be at home for a while, so I'd have to bide my time to put my plan to get into his house into action. In the mean time, I decided I would check out the monster truck show in Kettletown and see what I could find out about Ricky Paulson.
